Özden Güngör, and head of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Assistant Professor Dr. Masum Burak.

‘Craftsmen and candidates of plant breeding gathered together’

“We are very pleased to have brought once again the craftsmen of plant breeding together with those who are taking their first steps in this profession,” BİSAB Chairman Associate Professor Dr. Yalçın Kaya said in the beginning of his keynote address.

‘Don’t lose your enthusiasm and resolve’
Speaking to plant breeder candidate students from the Agriculture Faculties of 15 universities, BİSAB Chairman Kaya said “You are the guarantee of food security in the future. You will dedicate yourself to plant breeding, a profession that comes from the heart and requires patience, to become one among the most important scientists of Turkey. We, as BİSAD, are organizing the Plant Breeders Day to intensify your enthusiasm. So please, don’t lose your enthusiasm and resolve.”

‘We didn’t came to these days easily, but the most important is to reach our goals’

BİSAB Chairman Kaya said wheat cross-breeding in Turkey had started 90 years ago, explaining that this was the reason this year’s main theme was chosen as the “90th Year of Plant Breeding in Turkey.” “Coming to these days hasn’t been easy, but what’s more important it’s to reach our goals of 2023 and become a brand for new species being developed,” Kaya said.

Taking the floor after Kaya, TÜRKTOB Chairman Yıldıray Gencer thanked the executive board of BİSAB for developing the idea of marking May 11 Plant Breeders Day and organizing celebratory events for six years, before adding: “Our sector is now exporting seeds. We are selling more than $ 150 million worth of seeds to 70 countries. But another very important development took place this year and our imports have started to drop for the first time. These developments are due to the fulfillment of legal infrastructure, the institutionalization of TÜRKTOB and sub-unions as well as the supports and incentives provided by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock.”

Following the keynote addresses, the event moved on to a panel discussion entitled “90th Year of Plant Breeding in Turkey” and presided by TAGEM’s General Director Masum Burak.

During the panel, Ankara University Agriculture Faculty teaching fellow Prof. Dr. Neşet Aslan delivered a presentation entitled “Plant Breeding from the Past to the Present,” Private Sector General Director Fahri Harmanşah spoke on “Plant Breeding in the Private Sector from the Past to the Present” and Chairman of the Variety Registration and Seed Certification Centre’s (TTSM) Registration of Varieties Department, Orhan Balcı, made a presentation about “Varieties Bred from the Past to the Present and their Contribution to our Country’s Agriculture.”

Representatives of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock as well as from all the relevant public and non-governmental institutions attended to the May 11 Plant Breeders Day event, along with scholars and students from the Agriculture Faculties of Bozok, Atatürk, Sütçü İmam, Akdeniz, Uludağ, Ahi Evran, Eskişehir Osmangazi, Namık Kemal, Ankara, Ondokuz Mayıs, Selçuk, Harran, Ege, Erciyes ve Çukurova Universities.
