ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONAL EVENT ORGANIZED BY BISAB

             Our Sub-Union organized an international panel on “Variety Protection and Plant Breeders’ Rights System Practices in Turkey and Europe” in Antalya on April 26, 2014. The members of our Sub-Union as well as officials from the Turkish Seed Producers Union and other Sub-Unions, and concerned representatives from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock and universities also attended the panel.

           In his opening remarks for the panel, Plant Breeders Sub-Union (BISAB) Chairman of the Board, Assoc. Prof. Seydi Ahmet Bağcı emphasized that plant breeders contributed to global peace in his speech, and said “BISAB, on the one hand, pursues the studies conducted and models applied in the systems that are previously established in the world and especially in Europe; and on the other hand, it investigates what could be done in a joint effort with officials from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. “The need for everybody to reach healthy vegetative and animal products is on top of the global agenda, however, the work of breeders generally do not come into the limelight,” said  Assoc. Prof. Bağcı, and added, “It is very important to protect new varieties obtained as a result of plant breeding, which is a long term endeavor, and breeders’ rights”.

            In a later speech, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Vice General Director of Agricultural Research and Policies Dr. Ali Osman Sarı informed the participants on how far the seed production industry in Turkey has come, the legislation concerning the topics of the panel, practices and the incentives offered.

In the panel moderated by the former Manager of Seed Registration and Certification Center, and TAREKS Vice General Manager Kamil YILMAZ, a member of our Sub-Union; Crop Plants Central Research Institute Manager Dr. Mevlüt Şahin gave a presentation on “Breeders’ rights Practices in the Turkish Public Sectors, and Agricultural Engineer from BÜGEM Seed Production Department İlknur YALVAÇ gave a presentation on “The Current Status of Breeders’ Rights in Turkey.” Later, Plant Variety Office of Germany (BSA) Representative Friedhilde Trautwein and the Director General of Breeders Trust, - a special institution protecting breeders’ rights in the Netherlands- Geer Staring provided the participants with information on the practices in their own countries.

In the meeting, which was attentively followed by the participants, the panelists gave detailed answers to incoming questions. The panel was finalized with a plaque ceremony.
