A MAGNIFICIENT INTERNATIONAL EVENT BEARING OUR SIGNATURE

The First International Plant Breeding Congress that was held under the leadership of Plant Breeders Sub-Union in cooperation with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies, on November 10-14, 2013 in Antalya received a lot of attention.

Vice Chairman of our Sub-Union and Congress Organization Committee Chairman Dr. Vehbi Eser held the opening speech at the First International Plant Breeding Congress, honored by the participation of around 650 people, including 350 participants from abroad. Starting off by thanking the participants and contributors of the congress, Dr. Eser said, in summary, that the congress, which was announced and prepared in a very short time by emphasizing the importance of plant breeding, was the first one awarded with such a tremendous participation in the world by emphasizing the importance of plant breeding, and the congress served a very important objective by bringing the scientists from various industries together.

                Later on, European Association on Research for Plant Breeding President Dr. Beat Boller, Turkish Seed Union Chairman of the Board Yıldıray Gencer, FAO Turkey Regional Office President Dr. Mustafa Sınaceur and Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock Agricultural Research and Policies Director General Assoc. Prof. Masum Burak took the floor. Representatives of Turkish Seed Union (TÜRKTOB), Plant Breeders Association (TUBİD), and of international organizations such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Economic Cooperation Countries Seed Growers Association (ECOSA), European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA), International Community of Breeders of Asexually Reproduced Ornamental and Fruit Varieties (CIOPORA), International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) were also present. Following the inauguration remarks, plaques were presented to the institutions and organizations that have supported the International Plant Breeding Congress.

The next session was on plant breeding for the future, new molecular breeding techniques, genetic resources, crop and horticultural plants. Around 600 presentations were made, 315 on crop plants, 130 on horticultural plants and 110 on genetic resources, as well as the presentations of invited participants.

          Speaking at the closure of the congress, BISAB Chairman of the Board Assoc. Prof. Bağcı said that 650 national and international scientists and researchers were brought together on the occasion of this congress, the congress stood as a resource for “Ekin Journal” preparing for publication, and the second congress would be held in 2015.
